The first leg of Atletico Madrid Champions League tie against Chelsea will not be held at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano. Instead, it will take place in Bucharest, Romania.
This is because the Chelsea squad and staff are not able to fly to Madrid as a result of coronavirus travel restrictions between the UK and Spain.
With this in mind, an alternative venue that both teams would be able to travel to and return from was sought. The National Arena in Bucharest, where Atleti won the 2012 Europa League final, has been chosen for the game that'll take place on February 23.
"UEFA is able to officially confirm that the Champions League round of 16 first leg match between Atletico Madrid and Chelsea will now be played at the National Arena in Bucharest," a UEFA statement started.
"The date of the match (February 23, 2021) and the kick off time (21:00 CET) will remain the same.
"UEFA would like to express its gratitude to Atletico Madrid and Chelsea for their support and close cooperation, as well as the Romanian football federation for their assistance and agreeing to stage the match."
Other Champions League venue changes also, Borussia Monchengladbach vs Manchester City and RB Leipzig vs Liverpool will both take place in Budapest.
