Asisat Oshoala, Agba Baller: Things You Should Know About The Super Falcon's Player

Asisat Oshoala is a prominent figure in the world of women's football, known for her exceptional skills and contributions to the sport, she is a 29-year-old, born on October 9, 1994, in Ikorodu, Lagos, Nigeria.

 

 

 

 

In 2009, Oshoala started her career at the Nigerian Lower Division side FC Robo, from the year 2009 to 2013 before moving to join Rivers Angels.

Subsequently,  Oshoala began to gain ground in the football world and this led to recognition in the football world In 2015,  Oshoala made history by becoming the first African female to play in the Women's Super League, where she joined the Liverpool Ladies and her impressive debut season led to her winning the prestigious BBC Women's Footballer of the Year award in 2015.

Arsenal activated Oshoala's release clause at Liverpool and she joined the female team of the renowned North London club in 2016.

After a year in England, Oshoala moved to  Dalian Quanjian in the Chinese Super League and emerged as the highest scorer at the end of the season in 2017.

Following an impressive performance in China, She secured a loan deal move to Spanish club Barcelona Femení until the end of the season. She came to play and started making an impact, scored her first league goal against Rayo Vallecano, and in a few weeks scored a record-breaking goal against a tough title contender, Atletico Femeni at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Unarguably, Oshoala became the first-ever Barcelona Femení player and African player to score in a Champions League final and the first Nigerian to score in any UEFA Champions League final, regardless of gender.

Later in 2019, after a Six months loan deal, Barcelona exercised the option to sign Asisat Oshoala on a permanent deal from Dalian Quanjian. She still plays for Barcelona till Date.

In 2021, she was named in the Forbes 30 Under 30. She is popularly called “Àgba Baller”, which means

“Legendary Footballer” in her local parlance.

July 2023, after her group stage heroics against Australia in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, even though Oshoala came in as a substitute during the second half, she took advantage of a defensive error in the 72nd minute and beat three Australian players to the ball, sneaking a right foot inside the near post from an unexpected position to widen Nigeria’s lead. She ran to the sideline and peeled off her jersey in a celebration that got her a yellow card.

Australia then managed to cut the deficit to one goal when Alanna Kennedy nodded home a header in the 10th minute of stoppage time.

But Nigeria rode out the final seconds to move into a share of first place in Group B with Canada. Both Nigeria and Australia have four points from two games, with Nigeria one more than Australia.

The 11-time African champions played a goalless draw against an eliminated Ireland in their last group match that secured their position in the quarter-final.

"Agba Baller" has won many individual awards not limited to 5 times African Women's Footballer of the Year: 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022.

After the game against Australia, Oshoala said “Everyone went out to play their heart out, This team has a lot to offer, and the world has seen that today. Nigeria is the best Country in the World, Niger to the World!.”
